Marbella judge sees sentence confirmed in the Supreme Court

The Marbella ex judge, Francisco Javier de Urquía, has had his sentence of two years in prison for bribery confirmed by the Supreme Court. The sentence came from the Andalucía High Court in June 2010 who said that via a friend he had collected 60,000 € from a man charged in the Hidalgo money laundering case which Urquía was himself instructing. He was handed down two years in prison, a 17 ban from office and fined a total of 114,000 €. The Supreme Court has however considered that the three cases considered by the Andalucía court is in fact just one case, in three parts, and so they have reduced the sentence to two years in prison, 7 year ban from office and a 60,000 €. In Spain two year prison sentences are suspended for those who have no previous record, but Urquía has also got an earlier firm sentence for collecting a 73,800 € bribe from the man at the centre of the Malaya case, the ex Municipal Real Estate Assessor in Marbella, Juan Antonio Roca, and this would indicate that the judge may find himself in jail. A judge will finally decide on that.
