64 year old British man has died and another 43 year old survived after their 12 metre yacht started to take on water in heavy seas on Monday 360 miles to the NE of Gran Canaria.

The area was outside the SAR Spanish search and rescue zone in Moroccan waters.

The Britons sent an SOS message by radio which was received by the ‘Tordis Knitsen’ ship which went to assist, initially rescuing both men alive, but the older man died shortly after. The 43 year old is reported to be in good health.

The ‘Tordis Knutsen’ was expected to arrive on Gran Canaria, her intended destination at around 2000 on Tuesday, from where the Guardia Civil will handle the proceedings.

XIBERRAS WARNS AGAINST ANDORRA SUGGESTION

Maurice Xiberras, well known integrationist and a former Leader of the Opposition in the 1970s, has withdrawn his public support for Chief Minister Peter Caruana in response to statements in Seville last week regarding the modern Andorra constitution.

Last week Mr Caruana mooted that in the hypothetical situation that a modern Andorra status were offered to Gibraltar he might possibly recommend it to Gibraltarians in a referendum.

The Constitution of Andorra that was agreed by the Andorran people in a referendum 1993 was signed by Andorra's two co-princes, the President of France, and the Bishop of Urgell, who at that time were François Mitterrand and Joan Martí Alanis. The new constitution makes these two officials Andorra's heads of state but also states that Andorra's sovereignty lies with its people. Andorra is a member of the UN.

But in a letter to the Editor Mr Xiberras, who stood with the Gibraltar Labour party in 2003 though not elected, calls for the Chief Minister to offer a full public explanation for his statement and says his ministers should dissociate themselves publicly from the substance of his statement making the comparison with events in the time of Sir Joshua Hassan. He also urges a public retraction of the statements.

"There can be no question of engaging in 'open agenda' political talks, unless and until the Chief Minister retracts his statement," says Mr Xiberras adding that if Mr Caruana does not act and "in conscience holds to his view" then "he should consider where this now leaves British sovereignty and what the implications may be for Gibraltar politics."

Spain braces itself for a crisis made in Germany

FT.com / UK - Spain braces itself for a crisis made in Germany: "Spain saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Six months later, it is looking like it belongs to an incoming train. Seeing how the story unfolded in Greece and Ireland and watching the crisis heading for Portugal, it is no wonder that the dominant sentiment in Spain is concern. But more than that, the prevailing feeling is one of frustration with Germany.
With the May agreement in its pocket, the Spanish government went home and put together a reform package that had everything required to get Spain out of its collision course: government expenditure reductions, labour market reforms, public sector pay cuts, pension freezes, an extension of the retirement age and a rise in value added tax. Subsequently, the government, with the aid of the central bank, decided to rein in regional and local government deficits, forced regional saving banks to merge and made public its bank stress tests. Most of the measures are now in place. Spain’s current problems start not at home but rather abroad – in Germany, to be precise."

Spain is the “big elephant” in the European debt crisis

Spain is the “big elephant” in the European debt crisis because there may not be enough money to bail out the Iberian nation, saidNouriel Roubini, the New York University professor who predicted the global financial crisis.
Investor concern has shifted to Spain and Portugal since yesterday, when European governments sought to bolster the euro by giving Ireland an 85 billion-euro ($113 billion) aid package and diluting proposals that would have forced bondholders to bear some costs of future bailouts.
“It is quite likely that Portugal” will be next in line for a financial assistance, Roubini said today in Prague at a conference of chief executive officers sponsored by ING Groep NV. “The big elephant in the room is not Portugal but, of course, it’s Spain. There is not enough official money to bail out Spain if trouble occurs.”
HSBC Holdings Plc estimates Spain may need 351 billion euros over three years. The European Union may be able to deploy only 255 billion euros of the 440 billion-euro European Financial Stability Facility, according to Nomura International Plc. That’s because the bailout fund is financed by bonds, and governments agreed to set aside cash and link lending to the creditworthiness of donors to secure a AAA rating.
The cost of insuring the debt of Spain, which has the fourth-largest euro-region economy, and Portugal soared to record-high levels today, according to CMA prices for credit- default swaps. Contracts on Spain climbed 14 basis points to 336 while Portugal rose 23 basis points to 524.

Britain's most expensive flat

Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank is to pay a record rent for the final retail unit at One Hyde Park, the luxury Knightsbridge development managed by the Candy brothers in London.
The luxury residential and retail development claims to include Britain's most expensive flat, at £140m, and has attracted the interest of wealthy overseas tenants, particularly from the Gulf and Russia. It is thought that the Abu Dhabi group outbid other Middle Eastern banks as well as upmarket fashion retailers to bag the final 3,000sqft unit at street level – paying more than the area's current record of £550 per square foot.
Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, which was advised by agent CB Richard Ellis, joins luxury watch maker Rolex and McLaren's car showroom in the retail units, for which Nash Bond and Cushman & Wakefield are the leasing agents.
The Middle East has also invested heavily in upmarket Brompton Road, also in Knightsbridge, with a raft of top retailers and designer brands set to move in. It is thought that the US sports brand Nike is eyeing a shop currently occupied by fashion chain Monsoon, with bidders lining up to pay "key money" of around half a million pounds.
In the summer, Top Shop moved into the less-smart northern end of Brompton Road, and has acted as a magnet there for other fashion retailers, such as US-based Guess.

Secret Spanish mansion of rogue lawyer Andrew Nulty who made millions from sick and dying pitmen - pic - mirror.co.uk: "This is rogue lawyer Andrew Nulty's £5million bolthole - paid for by the sweat, tears and suffering of dying miners.
We tracked down the disgraced solicitor - struck off last year for siphoning off sick pitworkers' compensation - to his turreted home in millionaires' playground Sotogrande, southern Spain.
The vast seven-bedroom mansion has its own pool and a garage bigger than the average semi. But brazen Nulty also has a £1million beach-front apartment in the nearby tax haven, Gibraltar.
In another photo certain to enrage those of his clients still living, the balding 43-year-old basks in the winter sun as he drives the £150,000 Ferrari California he uses to get between the expat hideaways.
Nulty need never work again after he made £13million in a single year from miners' claims.
He was branded 'a disgrace to the profession' by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal for telling his ailing clients their claims would not cost a penny - then pocketing 15 per cent of compensation payouts, on top of a flat fee from the Government."

The Savoy: A landmark of luxury - UK, Travel - The Independent

The Savoy Cocktail BookThe Savoy: A landmark of luxury - UK, Travel - The Independent: "The original isn't always the best. Cars, computers, songs by Bob Dylan: so many good ideas have been taken and improved by others. When The Savoy opened in 1889, it was London's first luxury hotel, offering hot and cold running water, 24-hour room service, electric lighting and 'ascending rooms', or lifts, as we now say.
There were even telephones in the bathrooms. Indeed, the design included so many en suites that one builder enquired if they expected the guests to be amphibians. For a public used to chamber pots, such luxury was unimaginable. The Savoy has been a byword for style and glamour ever since.
Today, it takes a little more to impress, and the question is whether, after a three-year refurbishment programme, The Savoy can be both the first and last word in luxury. The answer is a defiant 'yes'."

Her designs displayed a unique style combining rigid glitter pieces and flowing feminine fabrics to create a modern take on power dressing. She described the influence behind the collection as “Mefale”; the ultimate balance of masculinity and femininity. She also took inspiration from ideas of escapism and self-defense, showing a real connection between her influences and their significance in the creative process.

The widespread coverage attained for her graduate collection from respected online publications such as Susie Bubble and Mirror Error is expected to be repeated as MAJINJOO prepares for London Fashion Week 2011."

Morocco is attracting the luxury investor | City A.M.

Morocco is attracting the luxury investor | City A.M.: "IT’s hot, it’s exotic and beautiful. No wonder Morocco, long on the traveller’s radar, is rapidly becoming the place that the beautiful people are going to buy their second homes. Says Alistair Emery, CEO of developer Ajensa, which is nearing completion of the Baglioni resort near Marrakech: “In the last few years as people have tightened their belts, Morocco has benefited because people have chosen not to go too far away. It’s on the doorstep of Europe, has constant climate and is the closest place that is something very different indeed.”
According to the Moroccan Tourist Board’s annual report, tourism numbers have risen 10 per cent in the last year. Inevitably, property investment follows tourism, both main objectives of the new king Mohammed VI when he took over at the end of the 1990s. Infrastructure, such as roads and sanitation, were improved, and effort was put into attracting top-level hotels. The reopenings of the super decadent La Mamounia, and the Royal Mansour, the king’s hotel, were felt round the world. “These two upped the level of the type of client going there,” says Emery. A Four Seasons with an epic spa and a Mandarin Oriental are due to open early next year, too."

The timeless experience of buying a luxury watch brand - Home - livemint.com

The timeless experience of buying a luxury watch brand - Home - livemint.com: "It is not often that one buys a bona fide luxury brand. But for a close family friend’s wedding last week, we decided to gift something very special—typically, that also means very expensive. So we zeroed in on a watch and set off for Noida’s Great India Place Mall. At the watch section of a retail chain store, a few bored salesmen, in ill-fitting shirts and ties, hung around. A couple of them ambled up to us, but said nothing more enlightening than how a golden Citizen would be a better wedding gift than a sporty Tissot. Apart from this personal opinion, we heard nothing knowledgeable about product features. The watches were stacked in open racks, like biscuits in a supermarket, which means both salesman and customer are on the same side and each is extending their arms to take out the pieces, which is sort of inconvenient. For a specialized product, the salesmen were no different from their counterparts selling stainless steel vessels in Big Bazaar down the corridor.
Not inspired to make a purchase, we went to the exclusive Rado store in the same mall. The displays were in a counter and there were fewer people (possibly because Rado’s starting range is higher). Two women sales assistants seemed to be snarling at each other. Their automatic series called Diastar, we were told by the older saleswoman, needed no battery but got charged by the wearer’s movement and once taken off, the charge would slowly die out. To understand this better, we asked for a product brochure. There isn’t any such thing, she said."

Luxury housing plan in Gloucester Park (From Basildon Recorder)

Luxury housing plan in Gloucester Park (From Basildon Recorder): "crescent of townhouses could be built in Gloucester Park under the £1billion Basildon masterplan.
Details have emerged of the houses, although it is not yet clear how many would be built on the site of the current swimming pool car park and former netball courts.
However, early plans released as part of the masterplan consultation show 35 separate buildings, some of which appear to be able to house a number of properties. The aerial images show three separate parallel streets in the crescent, with an interconnecting road through the middle.
Basildon Council leader Tony Ball said the images were indicative and it was not yet clear how many properties would be built.
He said: “The amount will all be part of the consultation. What has been proposed is a crescent of three-storey townhouses, similar to the Royal Crescent in Bath.”"

Spreads on 10-year Spanish bonds rose to a post-EMU record of 233 basis points over Bunds, pushing the yield to 4.87pc. Spain's central bank governor, Miguel Angel Fenrandez Ordonez, said the contagion had spread rapidly to the eurozone periphery and "made itself felt" in the Spanish debt markets. He called on Madrid to accelerate fiscal reforms to persuade the markets the country really means to put its house in order.
"Spain is a bit too big to be bailed out," said Antonia Garcia Pascual, of Barclays Capital. "The size of rescue required would use up all the funds available and then you have Italy with contagion as well."

Spain desperately trying to avoid Ireland scenario

gulfnews : Spain desperately trying to avoid Ireland scenario: "As debt-stricken Ireland heads for a Greek-style EU bailout, Spain is desperately trying to avoid being lumped in the same basket but analysts warn it will have to do more to keep investors happy.
There is 'absolutely no reason' to compare Spain with Ireland, Finance Minister Elena Salgado said on Friday.
'We are able to borrow fresh funds at practically the same [cost] as Italy and do much better than Ireland, Portugal and most certainly than Greece.
'I think the markets believe in Spain ... [which] has no need of any extra austerity measures,' she said.
In May, the EU and the International Monetary Fund bailed out Greece to the tune of 110 billion euros (Dh550 billion) to prevent a likely debt default that could have torpedoed the entire Eurozone project.
On Friday, EU, IMF and European Central Bank officials began tough talks in Dublin whose public finances have been stretched to the limit by the billions of euros it has spent to keep its devastated banks afloat.
As the Irish debt crisis has deepened, the rates it has to pay to raise fresh cash on the financial markets have risen sharply, with a knock-on effect on Portugal and Spain."
