THE most expensive property on the Spanish market has a Marbella address and costs just over €15 million.

Boasting a discotheque, private cinema and indoor swimming pool, the house has a spa, sauna and aromatherapy showers. Outside are two private golf greens, stables, tennis courts and clubhouse, a restaurant and a lake stocked with fish as well as a heliport. It is located in a gated community with high-level security, the estate agent’s brochure assures potential buyers. Maspalomas on Gran Canaria could be another choice for anyone determined to spend €15 million on a property. With a constructed area of 1,000 square metres on a 5,000 square metre plot, the one-storey house is the most expensive in the Canary Islands and has close access to beaches. Region by region, the next most expensive property is a €11 million house in Portals Nous in Baleares. A front-line luxury villa, it has five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a library, private cinema and billiards room. The dearest house currently for sale in the Madrid autonomous community costs €10.5 million and is located in exclusive La Moraleja on the outskirts of the capital. Brand-new with no previous occupants, its six bedrooms have en suite bathrooms and there is a swimming pool. The Extremadura region comes next with a €8.5 million price tag for its most expensive property. Unlike the modern Madrid home, this 10-bedroomed house was built in the 16th century. “Exquisitely restored” it retains gothic chimneys, period doors, a Roman bath “and all kinds of very special features.” It overlooks centuries-old olive trees, oaks, cypresses and pomegranate trees, vineyards and a lake. Valencia was the eighth-most expensive region, with its dearest home costing €5 million. This 17th century Alicante house has 16 bedrooms, two chimneys, two kitchens, a swimming pool and “perfect” gardens. Murcia took 12th place, with a €3.5 million Atamaria property built on a mountainside overlooking the sea. Navarra was bottom amongst Spain’s mainland regions, with the most expensive property priced at €1.5 million. The cheapest regional prices were found in Spain’s North African enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta, whose most expensive properties were offered at €900,000 and €700,000 respectively.
